News Release: City Manager Karen Brust Receives 30 Years Service Award

December 27, 2017…Encinitas, CA…City Manager Karen Brust was recognized and honored by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) for her 30 years of dedication to public service and professional management at the local level. Members that receive the 30 Years of Service Award were recognized individually on stage at the ICMA’s 103rd Annual Conference, which was held in San Antonio/Bexar County Texas on October 25th.  Karen was awarded the plaque at the conference which she attended.  

The Encinitas City Council acknowledged Karen’s service award at their last meeting on December 20th.  A few of her recent efforts at City Hall include reorganizing and establishing the Development Services Department for better coordination and acceleration of projects; improving customer service by opening Parks & Recreation Customer Service Counter; adding service tools such as SeeClickFix; and implementing mobility projects.  Karen is also known for her passion for instilling the values of empathy, responsiveness, and accountability in staff, and for developing high performance teams. 

About the award, Mayor Catherine Blakespear said, “we are fortunate to have Karen as City Manager of our organization. Her breadth of knowledge and life-long commitment to public service--driven by her passion for community engagement, communications and customer service--has made her an exceptional leader.” "It's great that Karen's long career as a civil servant has been recognized as exceptional by ICMA. I appreciate all the work that Karen has done for the city and look forward to her continuing to focus on the things that make life better for our residents," added Council Member Tony Kranz.

Karen has been City Manager for the City of Encinitas since September 2015 and has previously served as City Manager for the cities of San Juan Capistrano and Del Mar, Director of Finance/Treasurer for San Diego County Water Authority, Director of Finance for two cities in California, and as Deputy Director of Finance for New London, Connecticut and Treasurer for Wallingford, Connecticut. Karen holds a Master’s degree in Organizational Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Administrative Science from Connecticut State University.  She is a Certified Public Finance Officer and holds a certificate in Municipal Financial Leadership from the University of Southern California. Karen has noted that she is particularly proud to be able to serve her own community--she has been a Cardiff and Olivenhain resident for the last 17 years.
